Catatan Harian Si Boy

It's been months since the last time I went to a cinema without having to worry about the film I wanna see. What could I do? Without imported films, Indonesian cinemas are only showing either cheesy love stories stuffed with porn or stupid ghost stories, also stuffed with porn. The only film I saw in cinema (before Boy) in the last three or four months was Limitless, because, ironically, the amount of bearable films to watch in cinemas was pretty limited.

Suddenly, Catatan Harian Si Boy came to the rescue. I've been wanting to see this movie since about a week ago, but my girlfriend is seeing her nephew in Jogja and most of my playmates are busy playing Counter Strike, so I only had two choices: either to wait for one of them to be available or just to go watch it by myself like I did with Rumah Dara.

Well, luckily, another group of friends of mine are good to go. After a cancellation on the previous day (where we replaced it by watching Insidious in Alan's kostan), we finally went to watch Catatan Harian Si Boy.

I don't wanna spoil anything for you so I just wanna give a quick overview.

The film is the next sequel of the first three Catatan Si Boy films. However, it isn't about Boy anymore. Rather, Boy's diary becomes a symbol that plays an important part throughout this film. The story? Well, erm, I tried hard to write the summary of this film without giving a spoiler, but I failed, hard. So I erased it and write this instead:

GO FUCKING WATCH IT! It's the best Indonesian film in the last 12 months and probably one of the top ten Indonesian films in the last ten years. It's on par with Rumah Dara, Laskar Pelangi, Kala, Pintu Terlarang, Denias, Gie, erm..what else? I don't know I forget, but you get the point: Go. Fucking. Watch. It.

It's got a high speed car chase, smart dialogs, witty jokes, a lot of swearing, great acting, masculine men, cute man, pretty girls, a lot of cameos, a main protagonist who does sholat, and kisses a girl in a nightclub, and another girl under a car, the greatness goes on.

Sure, it's not without flaws. There are a few glitches here and there. But compared to other Indonesian films, Catatan Harian Si Boy is a diamond.

Vive le cinéma indonésien!

  1. Kebanyakan film² indonesia yang dibuat bergenre horor ga jelas dan judulnya pun ga bermutu banget kelihatan hanya mengejar uang semata tanpa memikirkan faktor lainya
